So 2 commercials have made the news recently for offending some people. First, here’s the Taco Bell ad promoting its new Variety Taco 12-Pack:
The backlash: The Center for Science in the Public Interest, a health advocacy group, claimed this ad discouraged people from eating vegetables and encouraged people to voice their concerns. Taco Bell actually backed down and has pulled the ad (hopefully the youtube video is still up).
Reeealllly, this ad that jestfully takes a dig at vegetarianism will stop people from eating vegetables? If the Center for Science in the Public Interest is gonna get mad at anything, it should be the Heart Attack Grill’s Quadruple Bypass Burger.
Then again, that might actually put people ON to eating vegetables.
The second commercial portrays a Caucasian male unflappably happy and speaking in a cheerful, Jamaican accent which ends up to be revealed as caused by his Volkswagon:
The backlash: The ad was accused of being racist, Barbara Lippert of Mediapost.com said “Didn’t anyone look at this? This is so racist. It’s just saying that black people are happy.” New York Times columnist Charles Blow added that it was “like blackface with voices.”
Tim Mahoney, Volkswagen’s marketing officer, said the company conducted research, including consultations with Jamaicans, to make sure that the ad was racially sensitive.
Gotta say, just like the last ad, some people seem to be making mountains out of molehills (still a stretch calling it a molehill). Volkswagon has yet to say whether it’ll pull the ad, though apparently it has a back-up one in case. I found the ad pretty funny.
