Watching the live feed of the crowds of people in St. Peter’s Square is pretty absorbing, just imagine being there among the exuberant crowds, even if you’re not Catholic/religious.
Buuuut for the rest of us not in Vatican City, after watching for 10-20 minutes, we might be thinking something along the lines of ‘well get on with it then.” They’re pulling this out more than Ryan Seacrest announcing the winner of American Idol.
While we wait for the announcement and appearance of the new Pope, here’s a couple of ideas for future conclaves between the time white smoke goes up and the Pope appears.
One of the few things that still reliably garners huge ratings on TV is live events such as the Super Bowl, Academy Awards, sports games, etc. While you’re never quite sure when or how long the conclave will take between announcing the election of a new Pope and announcing who it is, it wouldn’t hurt to have some ready-made ads on queue. Some that would be compatible with Vatican City and the Papal conclave include:
-Hand Sanitizer (Commercial of people in a tightly-packed crowd a la St. Peter’s Square, tight on person using hand sanitizer, look of confidence in knowing they are fighting germs)
-Olive Garden (C’mon, they can totally come up with some Pope pun-inspired dishes, yeah? “Conclave Clams” “Papal Pasta” “Calamari de Cristo” “The Holy See-food Scampi” “Black & White Smoked Salmon” “Pasta de Pontiff”)
